jcaiken Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Borders and title blocks take up a significant area of a drawing and are frequently the driving force behind the selection of a drawing's scale/paper size. Given the current capabilities for storing metadata within the drawing CAD files (including electronic signatures), is there any reason to retain the "standard" border and title block within the drawing itself (other than providing continuity with existing electronic, or historical paper drawings)? Is anyone developing modern standards for drawings which do not have the baggage of such historical compatibility with paper originals? Quote
nestly Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Perhaps some fields could do without paper hardcopies, but we're certainly not there yet in the construction industry. Quote
Organic Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Title blocks are certainly still relevant. If I have a plan buried under a pile of paperwork on my desk and find it in 3 months time, I want to be able to see a date and reference number on it. Likewise, when on site and see plans in use it is important that the latest revision (C, not B or even A etc) is being used. Quote
Dadgad Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Welcome to the forum. Short answer? Absolutely. Quote
ReMark Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Until will give up all reliance on paper copies of electronic drawings the answer is "Yes". Quote
designerstuart Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 could be one of those funky QR codes though ReMark could still read that Quote
ReMark Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Might as well ask if pencils and paper are still relevant. Quote
designerstuart Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 well heck, paper drawings are only necessary if we're gonna keep building things in the physical world. if we just live online instead then we never need to print, draw with pencils, or drill a hole in the right place again. Quote
designerstuart Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 (although having said that it looks like ReMark lives online already) Quote

BlackBox Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Many states hold that the printed plans are the legal construction document(s). Technically speaking, any contractor/surveyor that operates under this legal standard is accepting additional (unnecessary?) liability, when they layout a project using GPS (based on CAD files), rather than using the printed plan set. It is incumbant upon the contractor/surveyor to ensure that the electronic file(s) used for GPS match the printed plans, even if the design firm has furnished the electronic file(s). Using GPS is an 'acceptable risk' given the time savings, accuracy, etc., but again, technically speaking, they _are_ at risk for doing so until the law is changed. Quote
BIGAL Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Our one step forward is that we now produce nearly everthing as A3 size the old A1's are gone, the cost of printers made this viable. A paperless office is "could get my boss to stop printing correspondance and handing to me" rather than a email stating the letter is available electronically to read and store on the server for future reference and make the choice re hard copy. Re size of title block well just shrink anything you dont want some title blocks have massive amounts of room available devoted to revisions that may never happen. Quote
designerstuart Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 nobody likes the barcode thing then?! i thought that would be pretty cool. but i don't have a smart phone...... Quote
BIGAL Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 barcode thingy anybody have code for this ? Think of all the fun Quote
Organic Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 barcode thingy anybody have code for this ? Think of all the fun I thought he was referring to QR codes, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code Quote
designerstuart Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 it would make for a funky title block that would certainly take up less space Quote
SLW210 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Still would need a border and title block of sorts for the QR code. Quote
designerstuart Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 true - it would only take up less space. Quote
