Hi,

I have downloaded a free trial of Inventor fusion (latest) so as I can view an .stp file. Can someone please let me know how to take a 3D drawing and obtain 2D geometry that I can read in Autocad 2007.

I have saved as a .dxf but I get the error message "Invalid or incompete data' when trying to open.

I have very little (approx 30 minutes!!) experience of Inventor

Thanks in advance

Iain

EDIT: One of the drawings attached

Any help greatly appreciated

All I need to know is how to create a dimension-able (not a word, I know) drawing from the 3D model.

Tried to open in Mechanical 2012, threw this error:

Unknown value "AC1027" encountered in drawing version.

Invalid or incomplete DXF input -- drawing discarded.

Looks to be a 2013 version file, so not openable in your 2007 either...

Does Fusion have the option to "Save As" an older version of dxf?

Why dxf??

Simply save as 2007 version of dwg in Fusion to open in AutoCAD.

If I were you I would create the views you desire within inventor on a IDW template. Then export your IDW file as an Autocad DWG, which you can then open in AutoCAD. Note that you can save into any recent DWG version.

It doesn't sound like the OP has Inventor, only Inventor Fusion to open the file and convert to something AutoCAD can read.

Ah k, I wasn't aware they came separate. You can also just import the .stp directly into acad. Just type in "import" and press enter.

AutoCAD 2007 does not have a STEP translator.

If it did, I would have suggested that in my first response.

All sorted folks, thanks for the responese. Solution was to dowload Inventor Pro and export at 07 .dwg ( I have no idea what the difference between pro and fusion is) as get sort of aquanited with it through tutorial vids. I can't say I'd ever need it to model with in my job but for production of 2D drawings from 3D models is fantastic!
