import hatch pattern

Help please. I don't know if this makes a different but I am using autocad for mac 2012. I'm trying to import a stone hatch pattern from the Internet but every time I try to import it into my hatch gallery it says error in pattern file. Kind of stuck and would like a couple different hatch patterns to show my customers rather than just brick.

Could it be the method you are using? In the PC version of AutoCAD you do not "import" hatch patterns. You download them and either append them to the acad.pat file, put them in the same folder as acad.pat or put them in a different folder altogether then add the path to the folder in Options > Files and Folders > Search File Support Path.

Where did you get these hatch patterns? What are they of specifically?

autocad comes with a lot of different hatch patterns as standard - are none of them any good?

AutoCAD comes with a hatch called "gravel" but none called "stone". Some users may not find it suitable.

That's the problem. I've tries gravel but looking for more of a square stone look. I was able to import from one site but you can tell that it repeats every 5-6 stones.

It sounds like you are looking for stone veneer that might be used on the facade of a house for instance as opposed to the type of stone found along side a stream. Am I right?

Biltmore stone veneer.jpg

This one is called "Biltmore". FYI - most patterns will repeat fairly quickly. If you want something that doesn't then you will have to create a custom hatch pattern yourself. You can write a pattern definition file or you can use two commands from Express Tools called Make Shape and Make Linetype.

AutoCAD for Mac has no Express Tools AFAIK.

There may be an error in the hatch pattern file you are attempting to load. Make sure there is only one pattern definition in each pattern file, that the pattern name matches the filename and that there is a blank line at the end of the file.

If you still face diffficulty please upload the file for analysis.

No way I can decypher what you all are doing with creating hatches, however I did find this http://www.hatchkit.com.au/download.php

I had no success, but it could well be USER ERROR as the hatches looked great, loaded great and were done in an instant...just when I went to use them in AC in a real drawing, they were distorted.... I am NOT knocking the software....I still thnk its USER ERROR.

Has anyone else tried it?

Thanks for the tips everyone. I did get one that looks good. Maybe sometime someone can explain how to create my own.

Be aware the HatchKit Demonstration available from that link adds a watermark to the patterns it produces.

I wasn't exactly looiking for free, just a place for me to start learning about using 3D.

I've learned the hard way that just because you KNOW what you are doing and can deliver.....some guy can show up with a really nice presentation and sway the customer his direction.

That said. I have to compete with companies whose websites cost more than my truck. They buy stuf from whomever and where ever. The few remaining netmakers here in the USA struggle between keeping the trade alive or caving in to outsourcing. Some of the best of the best don't even design any more, they just sit back and order from over seas.

My interest in learning 3D is simple economics. A good while back i was asked to come to a meeting for some fishery research work. I was asked to bring a presentation. I showed up with a 10 minute video, roughly made and no editing...but clearly showing the ACTUAL, REAL WORLD proto type net , going into and coming out of the water with the desired target species caught.

This other guy who I do not beleive was a netmaker at all, shows up with a 10 minute presentation in what I believe was 3DMAX or close. Sea gulls squawking, water rippling, engine noise, back ground music, cute little cartoon fishes swimming the wrong way in the Gulf Stream, tow warps with the wrong angles, gear that had a net geometry that would have been physically impossibe to attain on the planet earth.... But it was the cutest Disney-like presentation I have ever seen. I kept waiting to see Mickey or Goofy stick their heads out of the wheel house.

He stayed to sign contracts....I drove home.

He had hired a guy to make him this presentation for him. He had the attention of everyone in that room....even me. heck, i was believeing it for awhile.

Now he never could deliver what his presentation showed.... but that is another story.

Lesson Learned. Presentation sells. Now you still have to deliver what you are showing, but you get the customer's attention no matter how small of a company you are. You get your chance to step up and deliver. Its why I use AutoCAD and its why now I want to start learning 3D. Its a goal.

Have a nice day....mine starts as soon as this arthiritus eases up just a tad bit in my hand...
