I received a cad model of a currently manufactured part. I need to model a form fitting part that fits over the current model. This is to be injection molded Nylon part that attaches by screwing the two have tegether, encasing the current part. My question: When moldeling the interior surfaces of the new part, can I use the surface of the existing part as the interior surfaces of the new part, or do I need to offset these surfaces? I dont want the new part to be too tight, but then again I dont want a sloppy fit. Any information is much appreciated.

i dont know that any of us can answer that for you. You have to know the tolerance of what you are making and what the manufacturing tolerance is going to be.

You can take your existing part(assuming its a solid) and subtract a copy of it from another solid to get your negative part.
