How to make spiral surface with the coil command

in tip no' 47, shown in the attached picture, there is a spiral surface only, but the coil command demands a closed profile for extrusion, it will not start without such a profile.

In the Coil command (and every solid feature command) there is an icon to select Surface output.

yes, that's true, but i don't refer to that.

The coil command needs a sketch to protrude along a path, usually a circle, representing the spring.

But here it seems i need only the spiral path, or surface.

Just need a line (any open sketch, or closed sketch) but in this case simply a line.
