We are having an issue with CAD users putting their xrefs on any layer that is current; thus creating some layer control issues. I would like to make it so that when they go to attach an xref the layer is automatically set to the "XREF" layer and then possibly reset to the previous layer. How would I go about doing this?

I am not sure how it is in AutoCAD civil but I would guess it is the same as AutoCAD Mechanical in where that you can change this in the options under a "standards" tab. do you have a tab simular to this under options?

Welcome to CADTutor.

Not sure where you are by way of customization, but as shown in this post, I use a Command Reactor that automagically creates (if not already present) our XREF layer, and sets it current when someone initiates an command associated (i.e., *IINSERT,*XCLIP,*XREF,*ATTACH, to name a few), and then restores the original layer when done (successful or not).

I also include a check when opening a drawing that automagically changes all XREFs _not_ on our XREF layer, to our XREF layer.
