How to make a shaft and a spur gear as one piece

With the design Accelerator i made a pair of spur gears, but i want to make one of them one piece with a longer shaft.

I mean i want to cut the teeth from a thicker shaft, and they shouldn't extend to the whole length on the shaft.

I tried to make one gear thicker and to remove material with a new part, but it only allows me to add material, not to cut.

Sorry, i had to edit the gear itself, it works.
