How to transfer the CUI to another computer?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I would like to transfer my current AutoCAD setup to another computer which at this point has AutoCAD out-of-the-box installed. The transfer needs to involve workspaces, toolbars, tool palettes, menus, pretty much the works. I'm not very comfortable working the CUI, so I'm looking for a kind of step-by-step process so to ensure that all of the above elements are brought over. Thanks :)

Did you purposefully create these desired customizations on the old PC?Or simply/partially edit what was already there?

AutoCAD and Windows versions on both PCs?

It makes all the difference in how others assist.

I have only somewhat modified the original content. Windows 7 and AutoCAD 2012 on both machines.

Have you tried using Export AutoCAD settings tool?

It's on start menu> all programs> Autodesk> AutoCAD xxxx> Migrate Custom Settings.

You can then import it to the other computer.

Remember, not all files are included in this process. You still have to manually copy the files. See what files are supported here.

If you want to follow Edwin's suggestion be aware the Export AutoCAD Settings Tool is only available in vanilla AutoCAD and not in any of the verticals.

Nope I've got it in my ACA 2013.

Though here's a query for Sirebian: Is the edits to the CUI done in the original ACAD.CUI (or whatever your acad calls it)? Or did you do these in the Custom.CUI or another Partial which you created manually? If the 1st, you might find that even the Migrate Settings won't work perfectly - as you're not supposed to edit acad's own files, only add to them with your own. So you might have to copy the ACAD.CUI file from the old machine to the new one too (overwriting the installed default version).

Note: Simply doing the CUI transfer is no guarantee that all is going to work as before. You might have some addons / lsp needed, or even additional support folders. Or any number of other possibilities. Hopefully the migration tools catch these, but be aware that you might need to ckeck that it performed correctly.
