Travisty Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I am relatively new to Cad and would like to know how to properly use the align command. I have a rotated drawing I'm trying to match up with a drawing that isn't rotated and I need to be exact. I know I can use rotate and mess around for a few minutes to get it done but I know using the align command would save me a lot of time. Please help Quote
ReMark Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 You have an object that is common to both drawings to align with/to? Quote
Travisty Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 my main drawing is "square"... the surveyors drawing is "square" with the world... So I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Perhaps you could just explain the align command and I can figure it out on my own? Quote
JD Mather Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 align Enter select all to move Enter select point on line to move select destination point on line to move it to select second point on line to move select second destination point on line to move it to Enter (don't need to scale, read the command line prompts as you go through these steps) You might practice this with a couple of rectangles. ReMark Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 My guess is the OP won't know what lines you are referring to. Quote
JD Mather Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 My guess is the OP won't know what lines you are referring to. Trial and error Practice should make it obvious and logical. Travisty - the lines don't have to be the same length. On your practice with an ortho rectangle and an angled rectangle - purposely make them different sizes so that you will understand the behavior. rkent Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 align Enterselect all to move Enter select point on line to move select destination point on line to move it to select second point on line to move select second destination point on line to move it to Enter (don't need to scale, read the command line prompts as you go through these steps) You might practice this with a couple of rectangles. OP, don't select all, select the objects you want to rotate, leaving the ones that are at the proper angle. Open Help and look there, they have examples of how to do it. Quote
JD Mather Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 OP, don't select all, ..... You are right - I didn't mean to use the command line all option, but meant to select everything that needs to be moved (by whatever means appropriate - window selection, crossing window, whatever...). I can see where my wording (especially when I told the OP to follow the command line prompts) could be confused when I said to select all..... (that needs) to be moved. Quote
Travisty Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 wow this forum is very helpful! Thanks for all the responses, I will practice my aligning and soon become a master aligner! Thanks again Quote
JD Mather Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Hollar back if you have trouble and I (or someone) will post a video of the process. Quote

Please help I should mention that the rotate command can be used easily without having to 'mess around' as you put it. Watch the command line, rotate has a reference option which allows you to pick two points, say end points of the same line, that grabs the angle for you. So assuming you have some geometry that is ortho to the World UCS, you start rotate, pick the objects to be rotated, pick a rotate point at the end of a line, say lower left, type R for reference, hit enter, now pick the same point on the line again and then the opposite endpoint of the line, now with Ortho on move your cursor and pick with the right mouse button.
