Bampmp Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Hello, I have a few easy questions... (1) How are blocks and attributes related to one another? (2) How are they used in... Mechanical drawings? (3) How are they used in... Architectural drawings? (4) What are the advantages to using blocks and attributes? (5) What are the disadvantages to using blocks and attributes? Thank you:) Quote
dbroada Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 1. attributes can only exist within blocks 2. however you want to use them 3. see 2 4. used correctly save time and file size 5. too many used incorrectly why do you ask? This looks like a homework assignment but if you can give a clue as to how you think they should be used we can put you right. Quote
ReMark Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 One advantage to using an attributed block is that the information can be extracted from it and used in a spreadsheet or a table. Attributed blocks adds intelligence to a drawing. Quote
CheSyn Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I find attributed blocks easier to work with in LISP, rather than having numerous blocks with different names or trying to add text in specific locations. It also makes drawings cleaner and user-friendly. Basically as ReMark said, it adds intelligence to a drawing. Quote
Bampmp Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 Yes it is a homework assignment.... thanx for the information! Quote
RobDraw Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Attributes CAN exist outside of blocks. It's not a good thing, but it does happen. I see it far too often. Quote
dbroada Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 ok, useable attributes can only exist within blocks. I too find them all the time, usually on a drawing worked on by somebody who's first instinct is to explode every block in sight. Quote
RobDraw Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 There is a guy on my team that actually "uses" them like they are a text entity and, yes, I have tried to teach him to use "burst" instead of "explode". Just yesterday, I caught him scaling a part plan up so that it printed at 1/4" in a 1/8" scale viewport Quote
CyberAngel Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Attributes CAN exist outside of blocks. It's not a good thing, but it does happen. I see it far too often. I'm working on one of those right now. Why would you use an attribute outside a block when you can put it inside? And if the contents won't change, why not use text inside the block? The name of the drawing isn't going to change very often, but I've got an attribute for it on a title block. (Y'know, a field would probably work there.) Quote
RobDraw Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 It's usually due to someone exploding a block, not actually inserting one into the drawing. There is a lisp here called TAG2TEXT that has come in handy for me on many occasion. Quote
