AutoCAD/Rhino to 3D Max

Hello kind people!

I am trying to transfer my Rhino model into 3D Max.

I need to make a complexly shaped floor plate. I have a closed outline, which I am extruding with Modifiers. The "cap" option is on, but the cap is not there. Can anybody suggest me how to make a cap on this object?

Thank you!

Hello Rewind!

Thanks for getting back to me.

You know, I was able to resolve this problem by joining closed set of lines into polyline with PEDIT command in AutoCAD.

I had a lot of artifacts in that line (I traveled thru many programs) and it is very difficult to understand where the problem comes from. But when it is polyline, it makes a cap in 3D Max.

I will take a look at your link thanks.

That's good. Its nice to hear you were able to figure it out. Well, just in case you're stuck into something in 3ds Max try to post it here we have some fellow members who are knowledgeable in using the program.

Hello Rewind!

Thank you for getting back to me.

I didn't want to post my model here because it is huge. But thank you for the invitation, I am sure I will use it! I am a beginner and I am building this complex model, so there will be a lot of questions.

I have one now:

I extruded my floor plan. The resulting model has gaps where doors and windows on the plan are. My thinking was: turn the model into editable poly, detach all parts and bridge them according to the height of doors or windows. Somebody told me that I can't turn it into editable poly, it has to stay parametric.

This bring s great confusion to me because I have no idea what this all mean (editable poly vs. parametric and what are their properties). I am trying to understand the difference, but it seems like a huge topic :)

If you could direct me into a link where I can read/listen to the explanation, that would be really helpful. I am also not sure if I am stating this all correctly :)

Thank you again

You can work on your model in any way that is comfortable for you. I always work in editable poly mode. I have never worked parametrically inside Studio Max.

If you're interested in parametric modeling, you might want to take a look at this video lecture: http://au.autodesk.com/?nd=event_class&session_id=7106&jid=747970

You don't have to post your model if you have questions about something, but posting screenshots is advised. It's important for us to see what you see on your screen and can really aid in helping us to help you.

Hello Cad!

Thanks for the video. The parametric modeling in Max reminded me of Grasshopper :) And it makes sense, because it is parametric. Thanks, great vid!

I will get back to you because I needed something else and I am trying to figure out my way thru this program to my goal.

Thanks again

and have a great day.

Oh my mistake, I missed some details on my post." What I mean in you can post it in here", Is your question or your problem. Good luck on using the program. Cheers! :)

Anyway, its already explained by Cad64, you don't have to post the file, just some screenshots is helpful to analyze the problem.(and if all else fails and in rare instances some members need to take a look at the file in order to find the solution)

Hello Rewind and Cad!

Sorry about long silence - I was remaking my model. I guess I need to describe in details what I need, because I can't really do it on my own.

My final goal is to render this model in Vray and also transfer it in UDK (for real-time render).

I had these PDF files, which I opened in Illustrator, cleaned, and transferred into Rhino in order to build a 3D model. I built a wire model (please see it in attached file), with intention to transfer it layer by layer into Max, extrude walls, build floors, details and so on.

The model is very complex (it is Tugendhat villa by Mies), so you can't just extrude all walls at once.

I ran into million little problems, like all beginners.

1. Rhino objects are not properly recognized by Max, so I traced them in Max.

2. I have trouble moving and snapping. I know how to move using move tool, but I am not sure how to snap it precisely to the corner.

This is where I got stuck.

But most importantly, I don't know if I am on a correct track - I really don't know how to build such complex model in Max.

If you guys can help me, even partially, I will really appreciate it.

Thank you!

E.

It is funny, but just stating my questions out loud helps me to resolve them :)

I found how to align objects and how to draw the same object and how to rotate precisely. I am very glad about that, I felt a bit overwhelmed with so many new tools, but now it is taking shape slowly.

Even without answering you already helped me!

Will you be so kind to advise about work flow?

Thanks again!

E.

If you want to build the model in Rhino and then render it in Studio Max, just Export your Rhino model to .dwg format and then Import that into Studio Max.

@efilana - I agree with this. Just wanna share my workflow when I want to render in 3ds Max, I normally modeled in AutoCAD then import to Max, (I'm not really pro in Modeling in Max and I never tried Rhino, but if there's a chance I would love to ) Im just curious, Does modeling in Rhino requires the line of work?
