jamesp1426 Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 (edited) Hello, Let me start by saying I'm new to AutoCAD, and am learning as I go. I am currently working on a .DWG in Civil3D which has 12 viewports. This particular .DWG causes my computer to lag quite a bit. I was wondering if there was a way of combining viewports in paper space (i.e. taking areas from multiple viewports and displaying them in one viewport), or if I am stuck with the individual viewports? I am just looking to speed up the process, it takes a long time to load the .DWG and work within it, the problem happens to others as well. .DWG info: Large area with many smaller sites (retention ponds and such) All sites must remain in the paper space layout (I've tried deleting viewports, and that does speed up the process, but again, I need to keep all sites intact). Computer info: Windows 7 64-bit 8GB Ram Intel Core i5-3450 CPU @ 3.10GHz NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800 Edited April 12, 2013 by jamesp1426 Quote
BIGAL Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Start by purging your drawing and get rid of any junk you dont need one of our guys is notoriuos for doing this makes so hard to simply work on one of his dwg's. Quote
jamesp1426 Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 Thanks for the reply, I did attempt to purge the file, it did help a little, but it still lags. Quote
ReMark Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Did you use the command line version of the purge command with the dash in front of it? -purge What is the file size of this drawing? Perhaps you need to increase the amount of RAM in your computer. Quote
Ski_Me Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Are there xrefs to this and other drawings your working on where you have this issue? Also do you have any pdfs inserted into the drawing? Quote
jamesp1426 Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 I did use that command, and the file size is about 1.19MB. I don't have an issue with other drawings, and others at my work have the same issue with the drawing, so I don't think it's an issue of Ram, I would think 8GB would be enough. Quote
jamesp1426 Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 Ski_Me: I do not have an issue with any of the other xrefs, it's just this particular drawing. I have other drawings with the same xrefs, and no issues...it's strange. When I reduce the number of viewports, the drawing processes much faster, the problem is I need to show the 12 different areas in one layout sheet. Quote
ReMark Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Did you purge Regapps first or did you immediately go with the "All" option? Did you run an Audit on the file to check for and fix any errors? Quote
jamesp1426 Posted April 18, 2013 Author Posted April 18, 2013 ReMark: I did use RegApps first, I realized there was a nested reference for a file I didn't need. I removed that and it sped up the process a bit, but it's still slow. Quote

PotGuy Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 What about 'overkill'? That can help reduce the size of the file. Quote
BIGAL Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 1.19 mb is tiny check for linetypes that are tiny dash dot style are reproducing at a tiny scale so really slow things down. We had a dot linetype 10 mins to open dwg. Quote
PotGuy Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Have never heard of that issue, although hatching has caused that in a ye olde thread-e. Must have the same principle behind it. Quote
jamesp1426 Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 ReMark and Dadgad, I did run audit and no errors found. Quote
jamesp1426 Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 What about 'overkill'? That can help reduce the size of the file. I did use overkill previously, so I know duplicates are not an issue. Quote

SLW210 Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Have you tried Detaching and then re-Attaching the XREFs? Quote
jamesp1426 Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 Have you tried Detaching and then re-Attaching the XREFs? I have tried that as well...I think now that I've done everything I can think of and looked at some additional suggestions the file is definitely at a more workable speed. It used to take 10 minutes to load, now it's about 2 minutes to start, and the lag time is down from about 5 minutes to almost real-time (30 seconds when switching between model and paper space, maybe less) Thanks everyone for your help. I hope this might help others with similar issues. Quote
