BIGMIKE09281946 Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 In the textbook Mastering AutoCAD 2006 ... I have a 2" x 2" square that has a 1/2" x 1/2" square Block called Tab1 inserted at one of the poles of the square and arrayed to the three other poles. I have an additional 3/4" x 1/2" Block called Tab2, that I am supposed to substitute with Tab1 using the insert command. The exercise in the text says; .... 4. Insert Tab1 into the drawing in four places. You can insert one and then use the Polar option under the Array command for the other three tabs. 5. Start the insert command again but at the prompt Block name (or ?): enter Tab1=Tab2. The drawing regenerates and an alternative version of the part appears with Tab2 replacing Tab1. I cannot get this to work. What is wrong ? Quote
dumfatnhappy Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 at the command line type '-insert' then 'tab1=tab2'....it'll tell you that tab1 is allready defined and do you wish to change it?' type 'Y' and all your tab1 blocks should become tab2.. Quote
lpseifert Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 Be sure Tab2 is already defined in the dwg. Quote
BIGMIKE09281946 Posted November 18, 2008 Author Posted November 18, 2008 'insert' gets me the Insert dialog box. Quote
BIGMIKE09281946 Posted November 18, 2008 Author Posted November 18, 2008 -insert gets me to this: (Enter block name or [?] Tab2 = Tab1 Quote

BIGMIKE09281946 Posted November 18, 2008 Author Posted November 18, 2008 dum, i am only getting the Tab1 to insert, it is not replacing the instances of Tab2. I am going to go to the book and start over with new data in a step by step approach. I will get back to you ASAP Quote
dbroada Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 don't put spaces in between Tab1=Tab2 are you sure Tab1 and Tab2 look different? Put both inthe drawing to check. You shouldn't have to but REGEN might reveal something happening Quote

dbroada Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 I'll defer to the big guy...... me? OldBlock= will update an existing block from an external file OldBlock=NewBlock will redefine the first block to equal the 2nd block. I assume you will then have a mixture of block names all looking identical. I've never actually used this method. Quote
BIGMIKE09281946 Posted November 18, 2008 Author Posted November 18, 2008 Y`ALL can put another one to bed. I got it to work. Thank You!! Quote
dumfatnhappy Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 woohoo - what got you there? "splash another bogey" ! Quote
BIGMIKE09281946 Posted November 18, 2008 Author Posted November 18, 2008 Dave, I did the only thing a true bolemic can, that is I did a re-purge-i-gate to get rid of a few meaty old misspelled tabs I had been hanging on to. I also re-Blockified Tab1 & Tab2, inserted the 1st Tab on to the East side of the square, arrayed the lot then I performed a -insert to Tab1=Tab2. I still had a 5th block attached to the cursor. don't know what that was about. cleared it with an Esc. Every get to Ireland? Quote
dbroada Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 the 5th one was the one you were inserting that forced the redefine. I usually esc them too. You can just drop it in place then erase last. Is that last line "ever get to Ireland"? In which case I have been to a cabinet builder we have used just outside Belfast a couple of times but that's all. Really must go back with the camper and have a look around. Quote
BIGMIKE09281946 Posted November 19, 2008 Author Posted November 19, 2008 Yes Dave, Ireland is where my grandfather and his seven brothers were born. Thank you for the help. Now get to bed. Quote
dbroada Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 interestingly, I tried this at work and it didn't work! I'll keep trying and report. I'm taking my time so I reach 2000 posts. Quote
dbroada Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 I don't know but F1 reveals that Block1=Block2 updates Block1 from an external file, not one within the drawing. I don't know when that changed but I am convinced it used to work as we were describing last night. Quote
