Hi all,

Can any of you point me in the direction of a thread or information.

I have created an assembly and saved it. I would like to copy the file and modify it while leaving the original file intact. I'm sure I have done this before but cant remember how I achieved it.

Have you tried bringing up the original file and use SAVE AS and save it under another name or

save the original to a disk or CD (i would use different file name no matter which way i did it)

Yeah, you would think that would do it.

If I copy the file, open the copy, modify it and then save as (new name), the original file has the modifications too.

I'm sure you had to break the link with the original file or a similar process.

Thanks for the suggestion though..

Thanks again Welldriller, I'm talking assemblies in Autodesk Inventor. :glare:

I'm sure I posted in Inventor!!o:)

Welldriller - you should ignore Autodesk Inventor topics. Inventor is not AutoCAD.

There are several ways to do this.

I hesitate to suggest any of the methods as I don't have time to fully explain any of them and as I hope you are aware you can mess up file dependencies if you are not careful.

The easiest way.

Make sure you are using Projects (*.ipj).

Save As Pack and Go from the top level (assembly *.iam or *.idw of iam) to a new folder.

Make rename project in that folder and make active.

Verify after opening that your paths are not referring to original files.

There is a better (safer) way using Design Assistant, but I use it so rarely that I have to figure it out each time.

And of course, if you are using Vault....

Hmm...Both of those suggestions seem like a royal pain in the assembly...but I'll have a try at them and try Design Assistant. Cheers,

yep....fought with those dependencies many times in the past, but they have become my friends.

I got round it by creating a layout for the first assembly and deriving my parts from it. Then I could create a second modified assembly using parts from the first and just deriving the new parts I needed. Still seems like a long way to do it.

Anyone else have a cunning way to do this?

Thanks for the help folks
