Silent Ace Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Hello, It seems that i cannot find a solution to connecting two circles with different diameter into a solid. I tried loft, but it is a partial solution since it creates a surface. I know there is a solid option. There surely is a way and a simple one but i don't know how. Bellow there is a picture with diameters and length of the mast. Also i included a dwg file. Not much done there. Thanks. mast.dwg Quote
JD Mather Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 I didn't look at the youtube link, but I think what you want to do is Loft and Shell solid or Loft and thicken surface or Extrude with taper and shell or Extrude surface with taper and thicken. So many ways. Revolve angled line as surface and thicken or Revolve angled rectangle. If you still can't figure it out - post back and I'll attach sample file with at least 6 different ways. In my opinion an angled line revolved as surface and thicken is the easiest solution. Quote
Silent Ace Posted August 8, 2013 Author Posted August 8, 2013 Well it seems that loft is working well if you chose path (line connecting the two circles in the center), creating the 3d solid. I tried the thicken command as well works to some extend, but still leaves a hollow part inside which i don't want. Also i tried removing the hollow part with solidedit as a face and deleting it. That didn't worked. As for the sweep command works with scale, however calculations need to be made for the scaling factor. Thank you both for your help, i learned a few new things along the way. ReMark Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 You did want the mast to be hollow didn't you? Quote
Silent Ace Posted August 8, 2013 Author Posted August 8, 2013 It's for a scaled boat model, so it doesn't need to be hollow. If it was a real one, then yes . Quote
ReMark Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 I see. Well then my command of choice would have been LOFT as well. Quote

Loft will work for you, watch the command line, pick the MOde option, change to Solid from Surface, continue on. You will have a solid instead of a surface. Quote
JD Mather Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Revolve is far easier than Loft. With loft you need to move (or create) circle to elevation. With revolve you simply create 4 lines, dimensioned to your major diameter (or radius), minor diameter and height. If you use Parametric dimensions - you can easily change. Quote
ReMark Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Create two circles, one at Z=0 and the second at the necessary height then loft. Doesn't sound like that much more work to me. Quote
rkent Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Draw two circles, move one, loft. Pretty easy. Quote

JD Mather Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Are you saying the parametric dimensions will change a 3D object? Can you walk me through that? Not in AutoCAD. Set DELOBJ=0 and if you decide to change double click on the dimension to change and then Revolve again after change (delete the original solid). I have no clue how you would do that with two circles (in AutoCAD). Quote
rkent Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 With either revolve or loft you just grab the grips and adjust the size by typing in a value to increase the circle by. I misunderstood you concerning the parametric dims. Quote
Bobzy20 Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Loft all the way. For some reason i wanna draw a boat now. Quote
Bobzy20 Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Yeah a real pirate ship would be great where as a somalian version would be rubbish. Quote
Silent Ace Posted August 9, 2013 Author Posted August 9, 2013 Wow it seems i made quite a discussion here . I already posted my work and files here http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?81044-Santa-Maria-Model. Thanks for your help. Quote
