Hello guys,

I'm new to autoCAD and I'm trying to get a grading between a polyline (constituted of arc segments inclined at 3%) and a terrain surface (generated from isolines) below it.

When I try to create a feature line from these arcs, I receive a message that Some of the entities aren't coplanar to the World Coordinate System and won't be converted.

I tried moving UCS to the same plane as the arcs but still receive the same error message.

My ultimate goal here is to create a surface of grading between these arcs and the surface below, generate a 3d view for a presentation and calculate the volume of fill material.

I attached a picture of the surface and the arcs in order to be more clear.

Thank you

Maybe you would get more responses if you had posted in the AutoCAD Vertical Products / Civil3D subforum. Perhaps a moderator can move your thread and at the same time come up with a more descriptive title.

Flatten the arcs as the endpoints of the arcs you are join trying to together are not at the same elevation.

Write down all the elevations of the arcs to keep track of them. Flatten the arcs. Make them into feature lines. Set the elevations of the arcs to the elevations you wrote down. (You can use the "set grade/slope between points" command to grade between the endpoints or other important elevation points.) Now your arcs are feature lines at the correct elevations. Next use the "Grade to surface" command in the grading tools.

Thanks for your help, guys!

I've put the arcs back to the horizontal position relative to "UCS World" created the feature line and it worked fine!

Then I put them back to 3% inclination and tried to grade to the surface below. It returned me the error: "The object normal is not oriented to positive Z axis, rejected operation"

It seems that also for grading, the upper object needs to be horizontal, but that does not make much sense to me.

Maybe try just adding the feature lines to the surface as breaklines?
