kltanker Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I'm a GIS analyst trying to learn Cad. I'd like to place a single point in autocad model space at a specific Northing/Easting position. After reading several forum threads I don't think CAD allows me to change the coordinate system of model space from map coords to northing easting coords, as we can in GIS. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Ken Quote
Organic Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Absolute Easting & Northing are just X & Y position values. Type po, 100,200 to place a point at Easting 100.000 & Northing 200.000 etc. If it is local coordinate system Easting & Northing (on a construction site for example), then you will also need a reference point on the site which your point is in relation too. kltanker Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 I appreciate organic's answer above, but my question is not answered. How do I set a reference point, with real world coordinates, like a survey control point in the center of a construction site? My goal is to save the ref point as a dwg, drop the point dwg into an ArcGIs map session, set to lat & long, and expect the point to be in it's real world loc Quote
eldon Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I think that what you are needing is GeoReference. You have to be a bit careful with the words used in AutoCAD. The World coordinate system applies to the AutoCAD world on your screen. It has absolutely nothing to do with the real world, but is used to differentiate between the default coordinate system on the screen and a User Coordinate System created whilst working. Probably the bad news for you is that Georeferencing is not available in AutoCAD LT. Quote
Murph_map Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 If you want to do GIS in CAD you need the proper vertical program like AutoCAD Civil3D or AutoCAD Map3D that allows you to use a coordinate system like the ESRI programs. You can transform you projects from one coordinate system very easy with them and also export the dwg entities to shp format. Quote
kltanker Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 Thanks to Eldon, Murph, and Organic for the prompt and useful responses, especially Eldon's since I didn't understand the CAD coord system options. I didn't want to miss a Cad capability, if there was one for this question. I'll proceed with obtaining Civil 3D to create DWGs with real world coords. Ken Quote
