nazerrul Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 (edited) Hi Guys! I am very new to AutoCAD Civil 3D, and i am encountering some problems with my client supplied data. The client had supplied me with a DTM file (as per attached Dalak_ASCII_BRSO.xyz) to be the input in AutorCAD Civil 3D, however, when i insert the DTM, the terrain only appears dotted. Is there any way i can convert the points into a 3D terrain model? For the time being, i am trying to figure out how to convert a topography drawing into 3D digital terrain. Attached is the example of the drawing. P/s : I am not coming from civil background. I know next to nothing about land surveying and this stuff. Seeking help! Is there any way i can convert the points into a 3D terrain model? ( How have you inserted the .xyz file? Did you do though the creation of a surface? if you did, you wull have to right click the surface and modify the surface style If you only inserted points, then you will need to create a surface from this data, and apply the appropiate style. This and the above can be achieved through the Project browser which can be accessed through the home panel in civil 3d. With regard to your second query does the topography have z values? more info is needed here. hopefully you can post a drawing soon Quote
nazerrul Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 here are the files: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9wh2pvc7td2npo2/Drawings%20and%20Points.zip ive inserted the point, but couldnt seem to create a surface out of them. The topography does not have z values as far as im concern. But can you verify? Thank you for the prompt replies guys. Very helpful indeed. Quote
Organic Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 What points are you talking about? If it is the ones in the 'Bathy1' bathymetry survey block, then they do have z values and you could create a surface from them. 'JA bathy' block, which looks like a detail survey, doesn't have points. You won't be able to create a surface from this data. Quote

I may need some times to get familiar with all these terms Frankly, i dont know what do these points represents. We got the raw data from our client. The .xyz supposedly be the input for the a SAGE Profile 3D software. But when i mount the input, the software only shows dotted terrain instead of solid. Attached are the snapshots of the one im having the issue of, and one that works fine. I had tried playing around with the raw data, but still end up failing. Here is the raw data : https://www.dropbox.com/s/qr4yrbrnw9mxf9i/130726%20Dalak_ASCII_WGS1984%20-%20160813.xyz Quote
nazerrul Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 Here is what i got from a software engineer: Quickest way is to explode the objects and check if the contours have elevations by listing them. In your case, there are no elevations so you’ll have to assign the elevations to the contour polylines in Civil 3D. I’ve attached a snapshot of where to get the command to convert 2d Polylines to 3D and assign elevations. Then Create a surface from the 3D Polylines you have just created. Make sure you assign elevations to the Major and Minor Contours to have an accurate Surface Model. P/s: Couldnt retrieve the snapshot. Too bad. Quote
feargt Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Hi, if you already have the points in a file (.xyz), then the following should be the easiest solution. In the project browser, Create a surface, and then under definition select points and select your xyz file. Then you have your surface. You can right click on the surface afterwards to modify the style (the display) to meet your needs. Quote
Emigrato Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Here is the raw data : https://www.dropbox.com/s/qr4yrbrnw9mxf9i/130726%20Dalak_ASCII_WGS1984%20-%20160813.xyz Beware, since those data are truncated after 2^16 rows (maybe the file was created by Excel 2003 or older). Quote
eldon Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Beware, since those data are truncated after 2^16 rows (maybe the file was created by Excel 2003 or older). I saw 100541 rows of data, so I would not think it has been truncated to 65536 rows. Quote
Emigrato Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I saw 100541 rows of data, so I would not think it has been truncated to 65536 rows. You'd better check the health of your pc, sir. I confirm: the file 130726 Dalak_ASCII_WGS1984 - 160813.xyz contains exactly 2^16=65536 rows, so it's incomplete for sure. Quote
eldon Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 (edited) Well here is the start of the file, and the end of the file (Dalak_ASCII_BRSO.xyz)as I see it. Can you explain it Edited August 23, 2013 by eldon added file name Quote
eldon Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 The OP has posted two data files, and I was looking at the earlier one, which seems to have more data than the second one. Quote
Emigrato Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 In my 'beware' post, I was talking about RAW DATA while you refer to cleaned, postprocessed ones, sir. Quote
