mikekmx Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Hi Guys... could someone please spell out what a repair will do. i had a major crash about 3 months ago and ever since have a couple of minor issues, the main one being that my profile isn't automatically loaded when launching the program. I've tried making new profiles but no luck getting them to automatically load on start-up. I have to open AutoCAD, close a dialogue "unable to load profile" and then select my profile to manually load it. Basically I don't want to lose my custom toolbars, many pallettes etc etc. How far does a 'repair' go? In the past i have been able to export all my settings, do a total re-install, and re-load all my settings - but only successfully when 'practising' it. I remember in the past when i have NEEDED to do it, it wasn't successful, so i'm a bit reluctant to do a full re-install - i would rather carry on with the faults than start from scratch again! Quote
ReMark Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 (edited) Found this at entercad.ru: If you accidentally delete or alter files that are required by AutoCAD, AutoCAD might not perform correctly, and you might receive error messages when you try to execute a command or find a file. REPAIR: This option replaces all registry entries that AutoCAD initially installed and restores AutoCAD to its default state. You should backup your custom files and/or create a Restore point before attempting a repair. Be safe not sorry. Edited October 10, 2013 by ReMark Quote
JD Mather Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 If you decide this is necessary: Clean uninstall. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=2887771&linkID=9240617 Clean Install http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=17955581&linkID=9240617 Personally I like to restore my HDD to OOTB condition at least no longer than 2 yrs and then the Windows Updates and all software. Every time I do this it never fails to amaze me how much faster my machine is (I've been doing this for about 8 years on 3 different machines over that time.) Make Windows Restore Points, Make Windows Restore Points, Make Windows Restore Points before and after installing any software. Did I mention to make...... Quote
ReMark Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Repair vs. Reinstall The Repair option replaces all Registry entries and restores AutoCAD to its default state. If you were missing some AutoCAD files this is the option to use. The Reinstall option repairs the Registry and reinstalls all files that were part of the original installation. Use this option when the Repair option does not solve your problem. Quote
mikekmx Posted October 10, 2013 Author Posted October 10, 2013 thanks guys, i have an old drive image prog that used to work wonderfully but iirc it needed a floppy disc and i have no FDD. i think i'll try and get that running again and have a play with repair and perhaps a re-install.... this as a nice fresh install about a year ago, on a m/c that is pretty much only used for autocad (& no internet connection), so generally in fairly reasonable condition, but the crash was a bad one. Faulty RAM. Quote
