Bogbadbob658 Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Has anybody tried using Dropbox to store there CAD files? Other offsite file storage systems I've tried have always had a problem with the AutoCAD file locking of files that are open at the time. Quote
ReMark Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I haven't but on the other hand I have downloaded AutoCAD files that others have uploaded to Dropbox that were too large (file size) to directly attach to a post here at CADTutor. Quote
Organic Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Dropbox works fine with AutoCad files. Quote
rkmcswain Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 .... always had a problem with the AutoCAD file locking of files that are open at the time. AutoCAD (at least AutoCAD for Windows) doesn't create lock files, the O/S handles file locking without any external files. Quote
Dadgad Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I found out late this afternoon that I had deleted a few thousand files from a DROPBOX folder, while trying to repath the link to a different folder on my computer. I have used it without any problems on both Vista and Windows 7, when this happened I was trying to get it dialed in on my little Windows 8 hotrod. I never confirmed any intention to delete any files. I really dislike Windows 8. Quote
ReMark Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I really appreciate beta testers like you Dadgad going where no man has gone before. You are a real pioneer. Thanks for taking the hit. Really...thank you! Quote

rkmcswain Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I thought the DWL-file was the lock-file? No, those are just ascii file used by "whohas.arx". See the gray box here. Quote

Tiger Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Huh. I have had it all wrong all the time then. Good to know - thanks! And great explaination of the save-process - I have once or twice or forever wondered what those SAV98C2.tmp files are, and just assumed that it was lost in some temp-file hole... Quote

Thanks for the input Organic, needless to say I was thrilled to hear that my boss, who shared the folder with me was able to recover all the files. Quote
cadsmarter Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Dropbox also keeps version history too which can be helpful Quote
