I had acad 12 installed on windows xp until my computer died. I now have windows 7 professional as an operating system on my new computer, but there seems to be an incompatibility as it won't accept acad 12.

We're talking about AutoCAD 2012 not AutoCAD Release 12 right?

Easy, install MS Virtual PC or Oracle Virtual Box. Under one of these install Windows XP and then try to install AutoCADr12. Windows 7 Professional is supposed to have an "XP Mode".

AuoCAD r12. I see.

I'm guessing all your work is in 2D. Do you use an lisp routines?

Barney, go over to Draftsight's web site and download their AutoCAD LT clone for free. No lisp routines but if all you need it 2D it's hard to beat for free.

The upside to DraftSight is the availability of both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. DraftSight is available from Dessault Systemes. There is even a 180+ page getting started manual in PDF form available for downloading too.

DraftSight will open AutoCAD files up to and including those saved to the 2010 file format. It also saves to the DWG file format.

I skipped from r9 to r14. Really liked r14 too.

I skipped 2008 and stayed at 2007 but I did make the jump to 2009. Have installed all releases since then except 2011. For some reason the install went horribly wrong and I swore that even after getting a replacement DVD I would not load it.

Thanks everyone. One by one, I'll try the fixes.
