Auto CAD Drawing Standards

Recommended Posts

Hello,

As an assignment in my university we were instructed to draw a component using BS8888 drawing standards. Now i am urrently using AutoCAD 2009.

Please can any one tell me how I can do this since i have no idea how to set the parameters of the BS 8888.

You need to set anything you want to be standard across any drawing you start should be set up in your dwt file. This can be selected from the drop down box when you "open drawing". Change what you need and save it then all drawings started with that template will have their basic settings the same.

Having said all that I don't think AutoCAD has a hook to BS8888. BS8888 is the standard that all UK draughtsmen should work to. It is also closly aligned with the European standard (number escapes me) so all European drawings should at least be similar. It is the standard for DRAWING - irrespective of how the drawing was produced. It is sometime since I read it but it did contain a section specifically for CAD but most of it is about size of text, dimensioning, weight of printed lines, shape of graphical symbols etc. Some of this can be set up in advance. It also explains projection over which AutoCAD has no control, that is down to the draughtsman.

I think your task is to go to the library (its too dear to buy) and work through finding out what standards will apply to your work. From there you can make sure what you draw complies.

BS 8888 Kits:

"The kits can be procured from British Standards Publishing, see link below, or they are available for reference in the UK at Central Libraries. British Standards also sell a CD which includes all of BS 8888 and all of the associated standards.."

"Note:In the 2004 edition of the BS 8888 CD a number of addition standards has been included. These are listed in the linked page "2004 Added Standards ""

you've been busy with your Funk & Wagnells then ReMark. :)

back to the OP - ReMark has touched on how big BS8888 is. Much of it won't apply to you but some will. When I started you had to know the relevant sections of BS308 and that was one reason that apprenticeships took 4 years. :) BS308 has been revised and is contained within BS8888. If you come across a BS308 it is a lighter read and will get you on your way.

First of all thanks for the interest. However havng read your post i still don't have a resource for where i can get the standards.

I need the BS8888 only for dimensioning, tolerances and drawing (such as line types and line weights etc.

Does any one has a source from where i can get these parameters, which then i wil input myself in the drawing ?

Thanks

is there no library in your vicinity?

ReMark will probably be back soon with a similar suggestion and we can't have these Americans thinking they are better than the home land.

Hi All,

Please don't think I am being rude, I have changed jobs, and don't get much time to visit CADtutor anymore. I shall try to find my copy and get it out to you all.

I've been trying to find a copy of BS 8888 for a while now. I only really want it for personal study but it remains illusive unless I buy from BSi. I know I'm late to the party but if anybody on the thread is still in a position to pass on a .pdf copy I would really appreciate it.
