Creating tool catalogs

I think this is a cad management question. I have been busy download manufacture cad files for my parts to use in drawings for my fire alarm designs (things like panel layout, inter connects, keypads just general stuff) and I know how to create tool pallets but I was wondering if it would be better to create a whole catalog instead of nothing but my parts. I've tried it before but it didn't work out I don't remember why. I think it would be easier to have a catalog and open a tool pallet that doesn't have like a million other pallets of thing I don't need or use.

I don't know how it couldn't work as long as you keep it organized. Maybe it didn't work because it was too cluttered the last time?

It's me stopping me. This is one of those I understand the idea but haven't got a clue how to make it work. Doesn't mean I won't try.
