Dual Monitors

I just got a dual monitor set-up. I have been told that you should be able to drag objects from one monitor to the next. I just assumed that this meant if I had one drawing open on one monitor and another drawing open on the other monitor that I could drag objects from one to the other. I have found that if I open autocad once and spread it across both monitors then I can drag from one monitor to the next in the same drawing, but no matter what I try(autocad open twice-one on each screen or autocad opened once and spread across two screens), I cannot drag objects from one drawing to the next(or one screen to the next). Is there a way to do this or is copy/paste the only way to get objects from one drawing to next?

I have dual monitors and I open autocad twice applying one to each monitor. I then open a drawing on each screen, when I highlight the secondary screen and work on that drawing all of my dialogue boxes pop up on the primary screen. Is this the way it should be?

in this scenario the number of monitors makes no difference. there are many ways to get objects into a drawing from another drawing but afaik dragging across is not one of them

If you right click and drag from one instance of CAD to another it does work.

Thanks Mike! It works! I just wonder why the "experts" @ autodesk did not know this.

There are quite a few nice little shortcuts when you right click, drag and drop objects into AutoCAD, for example when doing so with a DWG file it give you the option to insert it as a X-Ref, which is a huge time saver.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes.

Sorry, the point is that acad saves the position of each dialog. And that position includes on which screen. These things are saved in acad's registry settings. So if the dialog is moved in one session, that position is saved. Then when you open the same dialog in another session the same value is checked in registry - thus opening the dialog in the exact same spot as it was for the previous session.

You might be able to have one session set to a custom profile (say Left) and then make another profile for Right - profiles in the Options dialog's last tab. This should create 2 sets of registry folders so the one doesn't interfere with the other. It just means you'd need to adjust the current profile each time you open acad.

You might want to save two separate workspaces - one for single monitor mode and one for dual monitor mode.
