mm10do Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 For a school assignment, we were given a .dwg file that had errors and no object class data. Our job is to clean the topology by joining 'like' features, use the drawing clean-up, and then create object data. The topology and drawing clean-up is ONLY supposed to be done on 4 layers: Contours, Road_Centre_Line, Access_Road, Road_Construction. At this stage, no object data has been created, so my concern is not regarding that. I'm trying to join the lines in the Road_Construction layer, but they will not join. I read the help files for AutoCAD but I don't quite understand why they won't join. Hopefully someone can look at the file and let me know why they won't join and how to get them to join? Alternatively, since this assignment is to get us familiar with mapping standards (I know there are probably thousands, but...) is it standard practice to have a layer such as that one to be all one single connected object? I had a thought that maybe they aren't supposed to be connected because they are separate roads. Any input is appreciated. Since this is a fairly small file, I am certainly open to learning about any other errors I made/missed so far if anyone is willing to investigate. Assign 1 9305.dwg Cheers! Quote
Patrick Hughes Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I've got an old copy of MAP although I don't use it for its intended purpose or do much with joining lines and such. However when you are doing clean up work there are some settings that allow you to adjust the gap for things like joining lines, etc. If they are still part of the Cleanup Options dialog box look at Extend Undershoots and adjust the Tolerance. Also perhaps check Simplify Linear Objects with an adjusted Tolerance. (Just shooting from the hip here so I hope it helps) Quote
mm10do Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Thanks Patrick, I attempted to do these two things before - I never really tried changing the tolerance, but that didn't seem to solve my problem. The lines are all touching each other, but I think the issue is that they intersect perpendicularly...from what I understood from the help files, a simple joint does not allow the user to join perpendicular intersecting/crossing lines. eldon Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Having looked at the drawing, all the lines on layer Road_Construction are already polylines with a thickness and width. You do know that polylines cannot branch? I cannot see where there is joining left to do. You could enable Linetype generation. Quote

As Autocad plines have only one start point and one end point that's not possible. Quote
mm10do Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 Thanks guys, that does in fact help! I haven't had much experience at all using AutoCAD, except for a few tutorials from a textbook. As I said before, I thought that those polylines for Road_Construction were fine as is because they were separated into different roads, but I was just nervous to submit it that way because I wasn't sure if there was actually a way to join them.
