Hey guys,

Just a quick one... When i try to open my .dxf's straight from T-Bird it tries to open them as notepad files. Changed it to open in autocad and now i get a message saying 'cannot find the specified drawing file. Please verify that the file exists'.

Just looked into this and apparenlty you have to edit the registry, put in a string '[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dxf]"Content Type"="application/dxf"'

Does anyone know where this string should go because i cant seem to get it to work.

Thanks in advance

:)

I thought those details came in DWG, DXF, JPG and PDF file formats. Why didn't you grab a DWG file?

Because alot of my customers send .dxf's and i have ALOT of customers, so trying to get them all to send a specific file type constantly doesn't happen. As i found this what seems like a 'fix' for the issue i was hoping to just get it sorted instead of messing around. Thanks for the reply Mark.

When one edits the Windows Registry they are messing around as well. You should not have to edit the Registry to access a DXF file in AutoCAD. Did you try using the old stand-by DXFIN command in a new drawing?

What detail did your client send you? Was it for a rotor, spray head, pump nozzle, other? Do you have a model number?

Where to put that line in the Registry? Possibly add a new key here....

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dxf\ShellEx

Name: Content Type

Type: REG_SZ

Data: application/dxf

Now, I'm not 100% positive about this so I would caution you to first make a backup copy of your Registry. Next I'd suggest you familiarize yourself with how to replace a bad Registry if a problem occurs that prevents you from loading Windows. Then go for it. What's the worst that can happen?

Its only when opening directly out of Thunderbird - Mozilla Mail Software.

I have played with Registry before, i will be able to sort it if it goes bad as i did earlier on today when i messed my autocad up a couple of times trying to find where to put the code.

i will try this in the morning thankyou very much for your help Mark,

I will relay what happens tomorrow.:)

Why aren't you downloading the DXF to your computer THEN opening it? Wouldn't that make more sense?

Amen brother. I've never understood opening files directly from the email client (except for smaller text files and such).

I merely want to find out why this is now an issue, i recently had a new PC, and on my old one opening straight from mailbox wasn't an issue. But on this new one it is. So literally just want to understand why it is.

I can download them before opening but it is a personal preference that i don't.

That's why i dont.

Gonna give the code a try today.

Maybe you should have shared that information with us in your first post?

Could it have something to do with your email program and not with AutoCAD?

Not really no, as the first thing i did after i couldn't fatham it was plug in my old one side by side with the new. and check everything thunderbird and couldn't find anything different. Then check what i know of AutoCAD and found the same. So i didn't think applicable to mention the new system.

I just thought this was the place to come with AutoCAD issues which is why i posted in the first place. As i know many of you guys have way more extensive knowledge of CAD than myself as i am fairly new to the game.

I have had to save my files before opening from T-Bird - Can't find how to resolve.

Thanks For Your Help.

I don't believe it is an AutoCAD problem. I think it is a problem with Thunderbird. Just because they look the same doesn't mean they are the same.

We told you how to resolve the problem. It may not be what you wanted to hear but it works.

I have had various email programs tell me it couldn't find the "viewer" for several different kinds of attached files from time to time. Saving them first, then opening either from the Windows directory or from the program itself fixes it every time. While the file is still an attachment, it is held in either the Temporary internet files, windows temp folder or the cache. Never a good idea to use those copies.

One computer may have the operating system set for the proper default opening programs, and one may not.

Yeah no problem, thankyou for your explanation.

It wasn't a solution i needed, i had already made my solution myself by saving the files locally first. I just wanted to see if anyone here knew the reason behind why this would happen is all, as it intrigued me.

So it's not that it's not what i 'wanted to hear'. :)

Just to see if anyone else knew why this issue would occur.

Nevermind.

Thanks for your help anyway Mark. ;)

I'd try looking on the website of the makers of Thunderbird.
