spittle Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 I'm looking for a method to thin out Lidar data (I'm not sure of the exact format at the moment, but most likely points of some form if that helps!). I recall using some free GIS software some time ago but have forgotten the name of it. It allowed me to open and view large datasets, crop it to a specific area, and resample the data to thin it out. This was all to get it to a manageable size to create a surface in AutoCAD Civil 3D. Sorry for the vague terms - it's been a while since I looked at this stuff. The free software also allowed me to save it out as a greyscale height/displacement map. The free version saved an 8bit image, and the full one saved 16bit. I'm also looking for this functionality... ReMark Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Did you do a search on "GIS software"+"free"? That's where I would start. Quote

spittle Posted February 12, 2014 Author Posted February 12, 2014 "Free GIS" was my first port of call and it brought up a mindfield of packages but it's tricky to see in the features whether they'll do what I want. We tried several until we found one that worked well. Thanks f700es - i begin looking at these. Quote
