Can anyone let me know a way you can quickly locate a linetype or other object that might be referencing a .shx file in a drawing?

It should be obvious by looking at a list of linetypes that show a preview such as the layer manager. If you are looking for a linetype with a missing .shx and if I remember right, you will see rectangles where the .shx should be. You can then filter by that name with your preferred method.

Disclaimer: I cannot test this as I don't have a file with a missing .shx handy.

You can try the lisp file found on this page. It will report what linetypes reference what shape files, and any loaded shape files.
