ORTHO & Intersection Snap?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I usually am a Polar guy, not an Ortho guy. A job I'm on right now allows me to completely utilize Ortho but there's one quirk.... it seems when Ortho is enabled, the Intersection Snap becomes non-usable.

Been testing a few things for the past ten minutes and cannot figure it out. Any ideas on this? What am I missing?

Thanks!

I almost always use Ortho and I have never had a problem with Intersection. Do you have Otrack running? I don't use running osnaps much so try turning that off and setting intersection each time as a test.

Wait, what are you doing working in AutoCAD?

It is probably the Auto snap tracking. I have had problems with it in the same way. Ortho and snap tracking don't get along with each other.

Ha, I only use Revit for BIM. 20% of my work is still 2D shop drawings, which is AutoCAD work. My 2D setup in AutoCAD is WAY fast for creating non-3D, non-BIM mechanical HVAC and piping/plumbing layouts. AutoCAD, with the addition of LISP routines, is still king of the 2D realm.

I tried Otrack enabled/disabled, still nothing. I turned off Osnaps altogether and still same thing. Here's a video of it in action... maybe this could shine a little light on it?

Thanks again for the help rkent. :)

I can repeat your issue here, but I never run into it because I have perp set to F2 and just reach up and hit that without looking.

So you're using Perpendicular versus Intersection? Intersection usually works better for me for connecting at a 30 or 45 deg angle, for single lined wye fittings. I guess in this case Perp could be used... I'll try and reprogram my mind to use Perpendicular in this scenario.

Maybe your example video was too simple because you showed a line coming at an angle of 0 to the rectangle. But now you mention 30 or 45 deg angles which wouldn't work with Ortho (baring rotating the UCS) so I am not sure of the exact need.

Remember if you have an object to acquire a point for starting the tracking from, then Ortho works as expected, but picking a point and then moving towards the object won't work with otrack.

Yes, this is true... imagine if the line I was intersection with was already at an angle.

Gotcha. This makes sense, and answers my question. Like I mentioned before, on the example I linked you earlier, I'll just use Perp Osnap instead. Sometimes I just get lazy with my Osnaps and expect them to "just work" when I sometimes need to consider an alternative Osnap.
