Is there any way to change a line to a rectangular?

I have hundreds of lines with different lengths and need to change each to a rectangular with the same length and a specified width.

To do it manually you should call OFFSET and create a copy at the required width, then close the contour by two lines; using PEDIT may convert everything into a closed polyline.

This may be automated by an AutoLISP routine, but there should be also a rule to establish the side where the rectangle will "grow".
