rdennehy Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I have just loaded AutoCAD 2009 and left AutoCAD 2006 on my computer. Everytime I try to load a drawing directly from my files it goes to 2006. I have to have 2009 opened when I open the files. What is causing this and how can I correct it/ Quote

I have to have 2009 opened when I open the files. What is causing this and how can I correct it/ This is down to the operating system. Do a search for something like 'open with'. You are looking to change the program that opens a file type. Just set your .dwg file type to open with AutoCAD 2009 Quote
rustysilo Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 To get to "open with" just right click the .dwg file. Sometimes that doesn't fix the problem though. I have a co-worker who was having the same problem. I showed her how to fix it. She "fixed" it. It still opened .dwgs in '06. You may end up uninstalling '06. Quote
bonehead411 Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 To get to "open with" just right click the .dwg file. If I'm not wrong, that only opens the file with the chosen program as a 'one off.' Try Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types, look down the list for the dwg file type. Click the change button and set it to AutoCAD 2009. Quote

If it's Vista you can right click on the file and choose the program to open just that file or all files of that type. If it's XP you go the folder option route.... Quote
rustysilo Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 There is a check box in XP for "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" when you use the "open with" option of the right-click menu. Quote
Tankman Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Perhaps open '09 first, then OPEN file, point to the file you want to open. Works for me, I have '05 as well as '07 on several PC's and a couple of laptops. Quote

If you were working in 2006, then that one will become the default, so any files you try to open by selecting them in your Windows Explorer will open in 2006. You will need to open 2009 and then open a file using the File > Open menu option. This will make 2009 the default. Quote
