AutoCAD Electrical drafting

Hello CADTutors!

I have a background in architectural/structural drafting. I plan on training myself in electrical drafting. Does anyone have in mind of electrical drafting book materials? Also Autodesk AutoCAD Electrical vs. Autodesk AutoCAD MEP...is there a difference?

Posted

Yes there is a difference. AutoCAD Electrical is more for panel and circuit design (eg: electronics) and AutoCAD MEP is more for architectural, engineering and construction in the building industry.

Electrical Design Of Commercial And Industrial Buildings is by far the best book to learn the basics of electrical design for commercial buildings. Even includes DWG files for tutorials.

The Aubin Academy Master Series: AutoCAD MEP is the best book to learn AutoCAD MEP, which is the best AutoCAD-based platform to create electrical design for residential and commercial buildings. I had the first version of this years back and it really helped me out a ton.

If you're up for learning a new software and discipline, it might be in your best interest to look into the Revit platform since the AEC industry is rapidly moving towards it with the rising VDC and BIM industry needs. It will give you a tenacious grip for your career by making this move now rather than later.

Hope this helps!

We use AutoCAD Electrical to design our control cabinets and to handle all the electrical needs of a chemical plant for such things as motor control, solenoids, start/stop push buttons, pressure switches, level probes and transmitters, etc.

TZ, Just want to say thank you for the reference and Amazon link to the design text, "Electrical Design of Commercial and Industrial Buildings".

John, the pleasure is all mine. Your book is fantastic: easy to follow, complete, and most informative for anyone interested in electrical engineering and contracting for the AEC industry.
