marinebro0306 Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Hey, I am making a vice for a project in one of my Engineering classes in school. I have the entire thing made and assembled, but I have trouble making it actually work. I constrained an XZ workplane of the turning rod to a 0 degree angle with another part of the vice, so driving that constraint will make the rod, the end balls, and the screw the rod is connected to turn. My question is, how do I actually make the vice head move in conjuction with the screwing motion? I messed around with the motion constraints, but to no avail. I can make the head and rod move independently of eachother, but not together. Is there any way to accomplish this? I'm not really concerned about the rod moving up and down from gravity at the moment... I made it work in the presentation view, but overall it looked very choppy and not very realistic. So to make a long story short, how do I animate a vice? Thanks! (go to http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PI72I86M for the zip folder of all files, the password is vice) Quote
Barking_Mad Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Have you looked at any of the samples? If you change File>Projects..>Samples and then open Arbor Press it has an example of a rotation-translation constraint. Quote

Sorry, but that's not what I mean...that is a rack and pinion type of setup, I'm looking for a screw to travel a set distance. Quote
Aardvark Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Marinebro0306, Here is an example. You need to make a rotational constraint with a value equal to the number of rotations per inch of travel. You can then drive an angle constraint to make the parts move. I can't fit all the files into a single zip and post it so I will attach the second zip with the .iam file in my next post. ROTATION.zip Quote
Aardvark Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Here's the .iam I promised. ROTATION2.zip Quote
marinebro0306 Posted January 20, 2007 Author Posted January 20, 2007 Thanks for the files, but I ran into a problem. When I open either part, the features are grayed out and I cannot see/use them. Also, the assembly shows up in the preview, but says something about not being able to use pre existing constraints. I can see an axis though... Can anything be done about this? I really appreciate your help though. Quote
Aardvark Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 when you open the .ipts, in your model tree, there is a red circle with an X through it that says end of part. LMB and drag the end of part line below the features. This will make them active again. Sorry about that. Quote

Hi David, I run across this thread while searching for any tutorials on how to make the screw rotate and move forward/backward. I did tried following how you have created it but, I cant seem to make the screw to move forward/backward, The rotation was doing ok. Any headsup on this, where did I make wrong? Thanks. Quote
