unselecting objects

If I accidentally select an object that I didn't mean to select, is there a way of unselecting it other than hitting ESC? I mean, in cases where I have a whole bunch of other objects selected that I DON'T want unselected.

shift button click maybe.

If you hold shift down and select the object again that will remove it. (There are settings that change this behavior, but generally out of the box (OOTB) that is how it works.)

 

Also, type R, enter, then select things to remove from selection set, type A, enter, if you need to add more.
