deleting lines

yeah guys im working on a name that im going to cut out with a laser at work but im new to Auto cad. the problem is i need to erase segments of lines and not the hole line. is there a way where you can turn the out side lines into one line and erase all the lines in the middle kinda like a tool path. i attached the drawing with arrows pointing to some of the lines i dont want. thanks and im working on auto cad 08
