hekat Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Hi there. I am new to this forum, my last post may have posted but I can't find it so I am reposting. Thanks for your patience I am working on a drawing of a courtyard approx 300 feet wide, wanting to print on 22x34 paper. Drawing is correctly scaled in model space (when I use LIST on a line, it is the length it should be and in the correct unit) When I go to layout, I can't get the drawing to fit on the paper at 1"=20', it is too big. According to my calcs, the drawing at that scale should be 15" wide, and should fit fine. I can get it to fit at 3/32"=1' scale however, which makes no sense since the drawing at that scale should be 28" wide, and larger than at 1"=20'. My VP scales seem to be inverted or something!! My units are architectural and I have double checked the page size in Plot Layout about 30 times now. Any help is much appreciated. THANKS!! Quote
Dana W Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Your units Representation is set to Architectural. Have you run the command -DWGUNITS, hyphen required, to make sure your modelspace units are what you think they are? AutoCad Imperial templates default to inches. When you say "correctly scaled in modelspace" you mean that you drew all the objects at 1:1, (full size), right? Since you're talking Imperial units, rather than metric we will go with Imperial. Things about scales to keep in mind, Not that these have anything to do with your issue: The viewport scales are ratios that reflect the relationship of ONE paperspace unit to MANY modelspace units. 1:20 is not the same as 1" = 20'-0" unless your modelspace units are set to feet. Make sure your paperspace unit is set to inches on the page setup dialog. Don't monkey with the Plot Scale of 1:1 on the Plot or Page setup Dialog, unless you want to print a drawing on a reduced size paper for a one time deal. It's a whole different thing than viewport scale. Can you post the drawing here? You can Save As "Forum.dwg" and delete the proprietary info first. To attach, use the "Go Advanced" button before trying to attach a file here. Then hit the paperclip icon and follow the prompts; Add Files, choose file, upload, Done. (Why is this png so much smaller than I thought it would be?) Quote
hekat Posted May 30, 2015 Author Posted May 30, 2015 Yes, I'm sure my drawing is full size in model space (the LIST command shows that things are the correct length, for instance the length of the patio of the northern most building is 75 feet). The units in model space are in inches, which is the default. I have not heard of paper space units before! Try as I might, I could not find them in the Page Setup dialog. Sorry. THANK YOU for reviewing my file. forum.dwg Quote
Cad64 Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 You will have to do a little math to get the viewport scale for a 1:20 plot. First, multiply the feet by 12 to get the zoom factor. For a 1:20 plot, the feet are 20, so you would multiply 20 x 12 which equals 240. 240 is the zoom factor. Now, double click inside your viewport to activate it, type Z and hit Enter. Next, type 1/240xp and hit Enter. Your viewport is now set for a 1:20 plot. If you follow the link below and scroll down the page a bit, there is a chart showing all the standard zoom factors. http://academics.triton.edu/faculty/fheitzman/space.html Quote
hekat Posted May 31, 2015 Author Posted May 31, 2015 Wow, Thank You!! That worked. Great to know. Quote
ReMark Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 As previously mentioned 1:20 is not the same as 1"=20'. You do know you can edit the scale list to include engineering scales don't you? I've added 1"=10', 1"=20', 1"=40', 1"=50', 1"=200' and 1"=2000' (USGS quad maps use this scale). Quote

Dana W Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 When scaling a viewport in 2015, and a couple releases back, one can simply select the viewport frame, then pick a scale from the Viewport Scale pop up menu on the task bar. Of course you have to have the Viewport Scale thingy selected for display on the taskbar in the first place. It saves us right brainers from having to deal with math stuff and pesky numbers. Quote
Ski_Me Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 I agree with Dana, numbers are pesky and in my opinion stupid I don't even know why we have them. Oh wait there are numbers relating to my bank account. Ok maybe numbers aren't that bad I just need a bigger number when I look at my ledger. Quote
