I have a drawing : "drawing 1"

In this drawing I have an xref. This xref was "xref date 01" to start with. The xref isn't a drawing of myself. In my drawing I changed the layercolors of the xref, I turned layers off,...

Every now and then I receive a nev version of this xref: "xref date 02", then "xref date 03" , ....

Everytime I change the link in my drawing and the xref is updated.

But recently when opening my drawing, the xref always refers to an old version "xref date 03". I have to manualy adapt the link to the latest version "xref date 06". As long as I work in the drawing, there isn't a problem. Everytime I reopen the drawing the xref is looking for "xref date 03" again and I have to relink the xref again.

All color- and layerchanges of the xref I made in my drawing are still OK.

Could this be an option or so?

Or what could be the cause?

Try to detach your old xref and attach it again

Move the old xref to another folder. In other words archive it. Get it out of AutoCad's recent search path.

Everytime I recieve a new xref I archive the old one and I update the link in my drawing. But when reopening the file, the link is refered back to the old xref name. And because the old xref is archived, it is a "missing" link.

I didn't try to detach it yet. Because there are a lot of colorchanges, layers on/off,... in the xref I would have to do this setup again.

AutoCAD 2009 was pretty bad, do you have all of the service packs and hotfixes installed?

Could you make a layer state to preserve the layer settings?

I use layer translator for transferring layer properties to the incoming updated background.
