I've turned on some sort of fence selection instead of the normal drag window.

 

How do I turn it off?

Did you just get 2016? If so, that's the new lasso selection. I'm away from CAD for server reboot but I'd look in the selection section of options to see if you can turn it off there.

Although I think the OP is using AutoCAD 2007.

If it is 2007, I'm not sure exactly what he is talking about.

if its the lasso you can also get the normal crossing window by clicking and dragging (and not holding the mouse button) or you can get the lasso by clicking and dragging (and holding down the mouse button). I was totally gonna disable lasso until i realized the difference.

Please clear up the confusion. What version of AutoCAD are you using that exhibits the problem you are describing?
