Creating array from area

I'm looking for a lisp that creates a square array and numbering each field after selecting area. Like this:

 

[BIGAL]

The creating array part is pretty easy you over build the array and use extrim to trim back to any shape. The numbering requires a bit of thought checking if number is within polygon.

 

The one bit of code I lost was the routine to do the array part did this sort of task for a client. I think I recreated it will have a look. Just picked pline and control corner, included arcs etc.
