Im trying to create title blocks with margins.

2 different layouts (A3 & A4) but with the same set margins in both.

Ive been told you set it from the edge of the 'paper' and not the dashed line that works as a border when you first enter paperspace, how do i go about this?

I know how to create the actual title block and viewports (thanks to Doove on here for that one! :) ), im just having difficulty finding info on margins.

A A3 sheet is 420x297mm say margins are 15mm all round thefore sheet is 420-(2x15) = 390 other 267mm allow 1mm sometimes a title sheet line will disappear if you do it exact.

So in paper space draw a rectang 389 x 266 this is your plottable area. Make your Mview the same size and scale accordingly .

If going from A3 to A4 use portrait to landscape with fit.

Hope this helps

How do you know its 15 all around though?

As in... how do you measure between the outside of the 'paper' to go in 15 on each side?

Do you just randomly guess where the start point is within the dotted border line?

....(sry, might sound a dumb question).

There's no such thing as a dumb question on CADTutor chris01, just lots of inquisitive minds wishing to further their knowledge. So don't worry, keep asking!

The bottom left hand corner of your layout is 0,0

Move your border / title block using the bottom left hand corner as the base point and type 15,15.

If your border is drawn at the correct size this should give you 15mm all round.

In your PC3 file for a particular plotter you will find that information. See attached. So select a paper size and then look down below to find out the length and width it can actually use.

Understood now, thanks people. :)

Turns out i spoke too soon.

I went into layout 1 and went into the page setup manager, setting it to 420x297.. and so on.

When you say the corner of the layout is 0,0... i thought you meant the very edge of the white paper but then realised you meant just inside of the dashed line (right?).

Trouble is then when i set it at 0,0 and go along 390 in the X axis, it not only goes past the dashed line at the other side, it goes completely off the page.

Maybe i set up the page wrong, but its still all baffling to me im afraid.

That should work, did you set up for portrait or landscape? That is the only thing I can think of.

And yes, start your titleblock at 0,0 and then go to the x and y values listed where I showed you in the earlier post.

You do have units set for decimal, right?

Hope that helps get you going.

Yes i checked the units and they are set for decimal.

Here's what im doing.

Right clicking on Layout 1 - Page Setup Manager - Modify

Once im in there i choose

Paper Size - ISO A3 (420,297)

What to Plot - Display (is that correct? i treid Layout too but with almost the same effect.

Scale 1:1 (not fitting to page)

Drawing Orientation - Landscape

Don't use Display, pick Layout.

Scale is 1:1

Landscape is correct.

So now you should be able to go into PS layout and start the line command, start at 0,0, now go 390 in the X direction, 280 (or whatever the value is from earlier post), and back 390, and close.

The lines should be inside the dashed lines, don't worry that they don't seem to line up, I think there is a disconnect in AutoCAD between the Layout area (Limits) and the plot area.

I use Extents set to 1:1 with the same results, once the title block has been sized properly it doesn't matter to the final outcome unless something is drawn outside the limits, which I don't do.

Good luck, write back if it still doesn't work.

Actually I am seeing the same problem here at work, it worked ok at home; the dashed line doesn't adjust for the paper size picked. I leave the dashed line showing plotting area off and this is another good reason to do so. Set it up so the margins of the plotter won't cut off your print and you are good to go.

So use the numbers as explained earlier and do a plot, if the lines are cut off, measure them on the paper and reduce your title block outline to those values or slightly lower. Plotting 1:1 ensures the proper plot result regardless of the size of the title block.

Out of the box Autocad sets the size of the bounding window dashed lines, once you reset the size of the paper and your plot area display extents layout etc the dashed lines will change.

As an example an A1 sheet is 24x36 no its 609.6x914 so if you jump from imperial "US" to AUS mm then the dashed area is tiny.

Lastly you must "apply to layout" to take effect

Had internet issues the past week since i saw this, tried it out (at least i think i did what you said right :P).

I did the Page Manager Setup in all the settings above that i said earlier, then going into (right clicking layout 1) Plot i did the same settings, A3 landscape, layout then apply to layout.

Now the point that used to be 0,0 on the bottom left of the dashed line is the co-ord 40, 25 or there abouts.

Is that the way its supposed to be?

'Set it up so the margins of the plotter won't cut off your print' .... how do i set that up?

Starting to feel like Autocad doesnt like me at this stage, lol.
