mlstlouis Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Title pretty much sums it up. At my institution, all student drawing files appear with an .exe extension instead of the usual .dwg. Any thoughts? I can't find any mention of this via Google or forum searches. Thanks! Quote
RobDraw Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Without more details, it sounds like a virus. Quote
mlstlouis Posted September 14, 2016 Author Posted September 14, 2016 What details would be helpful? The files all open and seem normal, apart from the extension in the filename. I like to have a little info to provide our IT department, since they're not experts on every type of software we use. Quote
RobDraw Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 I don't think this is an AutoCAD issue. If it is an actual file extension, then they shouldn't open correctly. Can you provide screen shots? Quote
mlstlouis Posted September 14, 2016 Author Posted September 14, 2016 It may not be an AutoCAD issue. I've got a screen capture, but it looks like I have to use an image hosting service to link to (which I don't have...) Quote
RobDraw Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 You do not need to host it. Upload directly using the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom right and then attach using "Manage Attachment". Quote
mlstlouis Posted September 14, 2016 Author Posted September 14, 2016 Thanks for the help. Here's a capture with the properties shown for one file. Notice is shows a .exe and .dwg in parenthesis after... Quote
RobDraw Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 The file extension, in parenthesis, is .dwg. Somehow the type of file has been associated with acad.exe. See if IT can make any sense of that. It is not an AutoCAD issue. Quote
ReMark Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Probably a Windows file type association problem. Maybe this will help. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/change-file-associations-windows Quote
RobDraw Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 That might help, but I don't think so as the file seems to behave normally. Quote
