berol
It's been suggested to me that all versions of AutoCAD only see positive locations for X and Y and perhaps Z, using the Ordinate tab on the toolbar, no matter where the UCS is placed. Is this true and if so, is there an automatic, not manual way to correct this? This would seem like a necessity if one is setting his digital readout using ordinate dimensions from a drawing. eldon
In AutoCAD, all dimensions seem to be positive. That includes Ordinate dimensions. But coordinates are both positive and negative.
berol
Is there a command in AutoCAD 2000 that gives you a coordinate location in the same manner that the ordinate command gives you absolute dimensions?
steven-g
The command ID will show the coordinate values of a picked point, but it's just returned to the command line, if you want something permanent then you will need something like a block or you can even use a text item with a field, but what are you trying to achieve. It will be much easier if we knew what you are wanting to do.

I am somewhat confused as to your need. A coordinate gives the x and y, positive or negative, and you can get that by the ID command. We have established that dimensions are always absolute, but the ordinate dimension only gives one dimension at a time, either x or y. Fields were not available in AutoCAD 2000. So if you want double ordinate dimensions or proper coordinates written into your drawing, then you have to use Lisp.
Stoneman1951
Any point selected (ID Point) West and South of 0,0,0 will show as negative
