Proxy objects in drawings

Issue

Proxy objects in AutoCAD are placeholders for custom objects that are created by ARX applications, such as Autodesk Mechanical Desktop.

By default Proxy objects are displayed if the application that created the custom objects is not currently running. For example, if a drawing that was created in Mechanical Desktop is opened in AutoCAD, objects that can only be created in Mechanical Desktop are displayed as proxy objects.

The following Autodesk applications create proxy objects:

  • Autodesk Mechanical Desktop
  • AutoCAD Mechanical
  • AutoCAD Architectural Desktop
  • AutoCAD Land Development Desktop

Solution

You can perform operations such as moving and copying proxy objects; however, special editing operations unique to the ARX application will not be available in AutoCAD. For example, you cannot perform parametric modifications to Mechanical Desktop objects in any application other than in Mechanical Desktop.

This rule applies whenever an ARX application that created the custom objects is not currently running while the drawing is opened in AutoCAD. The ARX application might be installed on the workstation, but not be running on the workstation.

Maybe WBLOCK belongs to the group of "special editing operations"?
