Hello,

I have a pretty complex drawing and I want to delete a region of it. There are to many lines and islands to do this by hand. Is there a way I can draw a polyline boundary and erase and trim all that is inside the boundary?

if you hit e then drag you can select a whole area to erase. dont know if thats what your asking for. Drag to the right to select every thing that is completly inside the box or to the left and any thing that is touching the box will be selected.

Are these lines unnecessary or just obscuring text/dimensions? If it's the later, you can turn on a background for the text and it will blank th area behind it. Alternately you can use a WIPEOUT to hide the linework, but these can occasionally get confusing.

If you simply want to get rid of the linework, first draw a closed polyline or polygon. Then select the TRIM command. Select the polygon as your cutting edge and the select the objects to trim with a selection window starting from the top-right to select any intersecting objects. Once the edges are trimmed off, select the remaining items in a similar manner with the ERASE command.

***Edit*** @ RKent: yet another express tool I never paid attention too...

Basically, I'm inserting a design grade topo into part of an original grade topo. Now, in the past I did this in LD05 by making a whole new terrain model with the new grade as an island inside the old grade. But LD05 has serious bugs and further, I don''t have it at my office anymore. I could use wipe to black out the insertion area, but I would rather not.

I tried to do what you said (that was my first obvious guess), but Ac08 locks if I try to do more than one line at a time, or a large area at a time. The coors are in feet and the area to trim is ~500 ACRES. The contour are polylines with a node about every 2 feet. I guess the program can't handle that.

I'll try the express menu and see what happens

Does the computer totally clam up on you or does it just take a long time? Sometimes if you just point, click, and walk away for a while it will do the job. You just have to have patience.

If your area to trim is 500 acres how much more is the entire site? That's a pretty big chunk o land.

Computer specs?

The system is a First quater 2008 Xi CAD station with 4GB and 2 AMD 64 processors. They build systems specifically for CAD and GIS. Vista 64 running the 64 bit version of ACAD08. It's actually a dual boot and we have ACAD running in both OS's (apparently that's legal since it's the same machine and only one can run at a time). I'm not sure how that works - maybe the disk has a 32 bit version? Hmm....something to look at. The other OS is XP32_SP3 - same problem. I have to say though that I only boot into XP in situations like this, so there may be some update or other issue with that OS (possible).

I am familiar with patience. And if I had to walk away for a day and wait I would - if it took that long for the entire process to happen. But I have waited upto 15 minutes for it to chew on just a few lines to trim. There are hundreds - or may almost a hundred polylines. So, regardless of full lockup or ACAD's slow math skills, the method wont work for me (unless I am missing something - very possible). Now, I know I have don similar by clicking line by line and waiting a minute or so, but can you see the tedium in that?

The site is ~1500 acres - maybe 2000 including surrounding area - I only deal with a portion of it.

If I sound frustrated, it isn't with you :) (or the site)
