Background info: got LandARCH 2009 Professional and am wanting to add a new symbol, specifically a tree trunk symbol. Is it possible to add it to the database so I can use it again later and if so how do I? Its got something to do with Block Manager I think....

EDIT:

Okay, so I found out that I need to install .dwg files so that works wonders. However how do I create my own symbols?

You want to know how to create symbols (blocks) in LandARCH 2009?

yep... or in cad. Basically I want to create some rock symbols, bench symbols, pots and vases. I know I have to do in cad but not sure how to go about it.

A block is just a drawing that is saved out to the hard drive using the WBlock command in AutoCAD. You've never created a block before?

nope....not yet. don't know what exactly what a block is. From my understanding it is a drawing that you can use over and over again... eg: a bathtub on a floor plan... or am I mistaken?

though whats the difference then between a block and a symbol?

A block is a group of entities saved as a single object. You can create a block and use it multiple times within a single drawing. You can also write the block to your hard drive (using the WBlock command) and later insert it into other drawings as the need arises.

The terms block and symbol are used somewhat interchangeably.

The best place to start learning about blocks is your User's Guide. If you do not have one then start by consulting AutoCAD Help. Blocks are a very powerful tool and one that you'll use often as you gain experience.

I think the main difference between a block and a symbol is that a CAD person would call it a block, and a non-CAD person would call it a symbol.

ahhh, been busy with the CAD Help today and have managed to understand what I am doing.... though that link helps alot.

Thanks for the help :)

NBC: thanks for the clarification there

Make sure to draw your blocks at a scale of 1:1. Also draw them on layer "0" with "ByBlock" attributes. By doing so you'll be able to override the current layer setting and have the ability to change the color or linetype without having to explode the block.

Just a note...in AutoCAD Electrical symbols are schematic blocks that are electrically intelligent.
