I have recieved *.SHP file from somone, and I am unable to open the file.

When I Google the file, it says that the file can be opened with Auto CAD. Would anyone know how to open it in Auto CAD?

Thanks.

This is likely a "shapefile" created gy a GIS application. AutoCAD Map can propbaly open/import it but I don't believe plain AutoCAD can.

This is sometimes confused with an Autocad "shape file" for creation of shapes for complex linetypes and fonts. A .shp is an ASCII file which gets compiled into a .shx file for use.

I too have a .shp file than can't be found on a certain plan that I open. I just click "Cancel" at the error/warning window and the plan opens fine. My question: is there any way to detach this file from the drawing and get rid of the pesky startup window?

I found the SHP file using the lisp routine from your referenced article but I can't delete it. Turns out it is a linetype. I did a Qselect for that linetype and nothing showed up. I tried to delete the linetype but deletion was not allowed. And it did not show up in purge.

I could probably delete it using the hard-purge software also in your referenced article but this is only a minor inconvenience so it is not worth buying the program at this point.

I'm going to fool around some. See if I can create a simple SHP linetype, give it the name of the "not found" one, then try to substitute at startup. Maybe then I can delete it once it is "found" in the drawing.

Thanks CarlB.

I guess that I will need to tell somone they are SOL then.
