wannabe Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Sorry if it's an easy one, but how do I make lines that are underneath faces appear dashed automatically? Cheers. Quote
wannabe Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 I've not been introduced to those command. I've just used a 3D solid as a prelude to my shell object. I then added a face at the two horizontal ends. However, I need the lines that are beneath the faces to be shown as dashed....ideally without exploding and redrawing those segments. Quote
wannabe Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 I'd just set up the view in a viewport. See the attached image where the nearest face is a region causing the lines and brickwork across the back face to be obscured; it's these lines I would like to show as dashed without redrawing, if possible. ReMark Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 My mistake (re: SOLVIEW and SOLDRAW). I thought you were creating 2D views of a 3D object. Quote
wannabe Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 So you don't know how I can make those lines behind the face appear dashed? The ones that are not currently visible? Quote
ReMark Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 You're working in model space with solids right? When you change your point of view you are expecting AutoCAD to automatically change the linework of the solid that is now hidden to a dashed linetype? Not going to happen. Quote

When you change your point of view you are expecting AutoCAD to automatically change the linework of the solid that is now hidden to a dashed linetype? Not going to happen. Autocad knows objects are behind faces, and makes the obscured portion invisible. To improve this and show the hidden parts to be dashed isn't something I would consider impossible to program into software such as this. Especially when you look at the complexity of the visual styles. Just my opinion. Thanks for your assistance. Quote
ReMark Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 If you want to offer this suggestion to AutoDesk then by all means please do so. Visit the AUGI website, registration is free, and search for the AutoCAD Wish List. Comments for the next release, 2011, are currently being solicited. The 2010 version will probably be released in April. Information regarding what "wishes" and/or new features were incorporated in the 2010 release are available for viewing. Perhaps this has already been addressed. Quote

Perhaps this has already been addressed. The new overrule in the .NET API is one option by adding some math to the custome worlddraw() you/we could write. So my guess is that your right. Someone priobably has addressed this issue. I'll report back if I can ascertain this. Quote
ReMark Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Not necessarily the fix you're looking for (hidden solids depicted as dashed) but have you thought of changing the VSFACEOPACITY variable? Quote

AutoCAD obviously knows where solid objects are in relation to each other. To prove this go into paper space and create a viewport. Use the command SOLVIEW to create the view of the objects that you want (ex. - Front or Side). Next use the SOLDRAW command. AutoCAD will automatically create the 2D view of the objects along with a separate layer for those lines that would normally be "hidden" from view. Make sure to have a hidden linetype loaded and assign it to the layer AutoCAD creates. Quote
ReMark Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 AUGI - AutoCAD Users Group International www.augi.com Once you register look at the opening web page. On the right hand side there is a Quick Links area. You'll find the AutoCAD Wish List among the choices. Click on that link. On the next page look for the topic "How It Works". This will explain the process by which AUGI members make recommendations to AutoDesk. Three submittals are made each year (February, June and October). They are currently working on the ACAD011 release as it is called. Several other topics regarding the Wish List are also available for viewing. Quote

ReMark Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 There are RSS feeds here at CT regarding AutoCAD 2010. If you missed them here is a link to noted author Ellen Finkelstein's website. This particular link is for her review of the new features that made it into the 2010 release. I did not see anything akin to what you are proposing although there are a couple of new features re: 3D that I found interesting. http://www.ellenfinkelstein.com/acad_news/autocad_news_autocad_2010_new_features.html Quote
