madriver Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I am trying to open a file (.dwg) from what I suspect is a mechanical AutoDesk Program, not sure which. Anyway it asked for the genltshp.shx file which I downloaded and saved. When I go to open the file now, it opens, but there is nothing in it. All the tabs are there, but no line work. No line work in model space. Layers are all on. Does anyone have any experience with AutoDesk mechanical or SolidWorks programs? And if so can ACAD2000 read these dwg files? Thanks BA Quote
Rebel Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Post up the file. It could be any number of things. If your autocad couldn't read the file then it wouldn't even open it (If I remember correctly, it's been a long time since I worked on 2000). I had this happen to me recently so check and see if this is the problem: I opened a drawing and even thought the model space background was black, the person who originally drew the file set the '0' layer to be color 0,0,0 (black as well) so I literally saw nothing when I opened the file even though I could see the grips when I pressed ctrl+a to select all Quote

I have already tried backround colors to see if the layers were black. My thought are that the shape file is proprietary and therefore the drawing won't show up. What is interesting is that a friend with LT2006 can see the line work and border in Paper Space tabs but nothing in model space. He saved the file as 2000, but I can see nothing in 2000. Nothing in paper or model space. Not even the borders. Also, I can see the entire drawing in the preview, but nothing when it loads. Quote
Cad64 Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Have you checked for missing Xrefs? If the drawing was sent to you, it's very possible that the person who sent it, neglected to include them. Quote

The file did not ask for xrefs when it loaded and there are no xrefs listed in the xref manager. Would you see the complete file in preview without attached or included xrefs? Quote
madriver Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 Does anyone have experience with the genltshp.shx file? Is it inherant to a paticular drawing or is it a shape font that is always the same? I downloaded the file from a web site. But is it a shape font that is created by the drawing for that drawing or is it a shp file that is always the same? I suspect that the shp file that was missing when I load the file is proprietary to that file....any thoughts? Thanks all BA Quote
Cad64 Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 The preview is just a snapshot that is taken when the file is closed, so yes, you would see the complete file in the preview, even though nothing shows up when the drawing is opened. The shx file is a shape file. It could be a font or it could be used in a custom linetype. I don't think it has anything to do with your drawing not showing up. Have you installed all the available service packs and object enablers for your version of Autocad? Quote
madriver Posted March 21, 2009 Author Posted March 21, 2009 Even if I need some patches or an object enabler, do you think it would hide the entire drawing and border? The dwg file is 33,639kb. Something should show up. Line work, text, border. Also of interest, the original dwg file is 5,361kb, when saved as 2000 it is 33,639kb? Quote
skipsophrenic Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Sorry to ask what may seem obvious question, but is the cad .dwg your working on saved in 2000 format? Quote

skipsophrenic Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 True, didn't think of that, Dont know if wipeouts were availiable in 2000, but if they were, could the objects bie hidden under any? Quote
madriver Posted March 21, 2009 Author Posted March 21, 2009 good call. Checked with tframes and there are no images or wipeouts. Quote
madriver Posted March 21, 2009 Author Posted March 21, 2009 it's crazy. I just saved the file and it's 33,647kb with nothing in it!!! Also there are (11) tabs Quote
