Cad64 Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Have you tried using the forum Search function? This topic has been discussed many times. You can start by checking the 'Similar Threads' at the bottom of this page. Quote
ReMark Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Hmmmm.....popular question yet again. It must be final project time at school. Quote
ReMark Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 A tutorial: http://www.dailycad.com/2008/06/autocad-tutorial-to-draw-a-3d-threaded-bolt/ Quote
Bill Tillman Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Thats is indeed a good tutorial for drawing threads. But be warned, like so many other tutorials out there, it's full of typos. If anyone can make sense of how the author gets the shape he shows using the polyline command, I'd appreciate knowing what it is I'm missing. Because by doing: 3 3/16 5 1/4,-1/16 (this will be a diagonal line whose delta X = 1/4 and delta Y = 1/16 2 Close You will not get the shape that the author shows. 2009-04-06 UPDATE: I figured out the the mistake the author made was leaving off the decimal point in line 3. It should be .5 not 5. By looking at the figure they include it's easy to think the long line along the bottom of the shape is to be 5 units. when it's actually the 3 unit long segment of the polyline. This does draw a very realistic looking machine screw and the method for making the bolt head is pretty good as well. The fact still remains that an awful lot of the tutorials I come across on the web are so full of typos and missing steps that it's hard to make sense out of them. Like the tutorials authored for Unix computing, the authors explain steps 1,2,4,7 and 8 expecting any dummy to know that steps 2,3,5 & 6 are also needed. Quote
Cad64 Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 I think we need our own definitive tutorial added to the FAQ. This question gets asked far too often, and like Bill stated, many of the free tutorials you find online, for things like this, are full of holes. Quote

humaironline Posted April 6, 2009 Author Posted April 6, 2009 Dear JD .... can you upload the file Threads.dwg as mention in the tutorial. thanks. Quote
Astroman Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 I am not too sure, but using Autocad 2002, I don't think the Helix command is available, or correct me if I am wrong.. Is there a work around? Quote
Cad64 Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Correct, the Helix command is not available in 2002. But if you search the forum, as I suggested in my previous post, you will find several discussions about this topic as well as lisp routines for this purpose. Start with the 'Similar Threads' at the bottom of this page and then use the forum Search function to look for posts about bolts, nuts, threads, etc. Quote
Astroman Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Yep I have made the 3d spiral lisp, which I guess is the same or similar to the helix command. Although not perfect I have made good progress with the making of the threads, although I still have to get my head around some of the commands in ACAD. Maybe I have aimed too high as a first project in ACAD. Quote
Astroman Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Just as an add on to my last post, I think having a tutorial or something on this subject would be great, would stop people asking the same question (I think) Search works, but then you end up with many posts of the same question, referring you back to the two main threaded bolt threads. Anyhow, I am new here, so I will leave it up to the elders of the forum to decide. Quote
