Songsiren Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 I'm new here this is my 1st post. Looking around at all of the posts I am not as computer savvy as a lot of you so I apologize in advance. Especially if I didn't post in the right area- I looked around quite a bit. I have Autocad Lt 2009 1st- I hate the way the toolbars look. I can't seem to figure out how to customize them like in previous CAD releases. 2nd- It keeps crashing in the middle of my work. Our IT guys don't know what the problem is. 1st it was fine, then I needed more memory, now that I have enough (according to them) they don't know why and it must be the CAD itself... Are there problems with 2009? Could it be my computer? Everything else runs fine. It ran fine when I had 2006 on my computer. I just upgraded. The IT guys told me not to delete the old 2006- could that be the problem? Thanks! Quote
rkmcswain Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 1. Define "previous versions". Prior to the menu change to CUI files? 2. What kind of crash? I know that is a vague question, but do you mean you are working along and zooming, panning, drawing lines, etc. and it just pops up with a fatal error? Or does it just vanish from the screen with no warning? Does it offer you a chance to save your work (which you shouldn't do BTW)? Any drawing? A certain set of drawings? What kind of video card are you running? Latest drivers? More details may help someone help you. Quote
Songsiren Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 I was working on 2006 before and I liked the way I could customize my toolbars and they were much smaller and I didn't have to go from tab to tab to get to the tools needed. I guess it doesn't really crash- it locks up. I do not have the opportunity to save. I usually have to just turn the whole machine off and re-boot. Why is saving if it offers bad? I am currently only working with one set of drawings. I haven't tried another file because I don't need to use anything else at the moment. It locks up when it feels like it so there is no telling when it will heppen. I have no idea about the video card or the driver. Is there a way to tell without taking my computer apart? I don't even know if I have a video card- or do all computers have that. Quote
rkmcswain Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Newer versions of AutoCAD have greater video demands, less so in LT since there is no true 3D support, but if you have video card that is built on the motherboard and/or have out of date drivers, then I would start troubleshooting with that... Go to Windows Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Adapter to view information on your video card model. Click Properties>Driver for information on the driver date and number. Compare at the website of your vendor. (Those instructions are for XP, Vista may be different) ------------- If AutoCAD gives you are dialog that says something like "AutoCAD cannot continue, do you want to save changes?" - that means AutoCAD has run into some corrupt data somewhere and if you save your changes, you stand a good chance of introducing bad data into your drawing. In that case, it's best to just say no thank you and retrieve your last good backup. Quote
Songsiren Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 I would think the driver would be out of date before the video card would be a problem... It's running on Windows XP2002 2.72 GHz 1.99 GB Ram I don't know what any of this means... Intel® 82945G Express Chipset Family 128 MB Intel Video Bios Quote
rkmcswain Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I think that video is built on the motherboard. That will work, but don't expect great performance. Next step is to update your drivers and test some more. Quote
Songsiren Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 So it's the computer that's having a problem? It's just too old? Can't support it? I was the tester here at the office. They are getting ready to load 2009 onto all the rest of the computers here. Not sure if we will have the same problems or not... Quote
skipsophrenic Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 The other thing is to check if there are any service pack's for '09 and just double check u're running on the latest. Quote
Songsiren Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 I'm about to get on a conference call with Tech Support and I think that's one of the things we aer going to check... Quote
ammobake Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I use autocad 2009 also (not LT though) but I've been having this crash problem too. I just started a thread about it here. I run it on XP Professional, SP3. I have an Acer with an AMD phenom 9600 quad-core processor @ 2.29 GHZ with 3.25 GB of RAM. The problem is that it doesn't even seem to be a crash problem.. Autocad usually gives you a warning it's going to crash (whether it be caused by low memory or whatever). And you usually get windows popups anyway when memory is running out. None of that is happening. And according to the tech support folks that gave us the subscription I have a "fast computer" that should be able to handle anything I throw at it even though I don't do alot of 3D work or my drawings. They were mystified. One minute I am working in autocad, the next minute it disappears without a trace.. All unsaved work becomes lost. And lastnight I lost 2-3 hrs of work. When autocad runs again, it always starts with recovery manager as if it DID crash. But why there was no autosave file created in a 4-5 hr time period is beyond me.. I had to start from scratch from when I saved it around 130PM (The crash occured around 5PM). It's bizarre.. It has no distinct cause either. it doesn't happen after certain commands or functions, but completely random. I have lost work before because of this problem, but only 10-20 minutes max. I tend to become engrossed in my work and sometimes I space out saving on a regular basis, like I normally do. But I HAVE noticed that it tends to occur when a file hasn't been saved for a while. Which, to me, tells me this is an autocad - related issue but not necessarily a memory-related issue since (at least in my case) memory problems can be ruled out. -ChriS Quote
ammobake Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Also thought I would mention that I'm currently doing a clean uninstall of 2009, I'm going to defragment my hard drive, and then I'm going to do a fresh install of Autocad 2010. See if that helps.. -ChriS Quote
ammobake Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Just to give an update on my situation. I found that my video card driver was very outdated and that my C drive was extremely fragmented. I updated the vid card driver and did a complete defrag of the hard drive. After that, I uninstalled 2009 and installed 2010. I haven't had the problem return. I guess it could still be a 2009-only issue. But in my case it was probably a combination of the vidcard driver being very old and the hard drive being extremely fragmented. That's my guess anyway. -ChriS Quote
